theatre-rites

1-22 May (no performances on Friday 2, 9 & 16 May)

This is a shop with a mind of its own.

Performance/Theatre Company info Performance details

Step off the street into the theatre-rites shop - a world of wondrous transformations and strange happenings where the items for sale take on a life of their own. Meet the inhabitants, a bizarre group of shop assistants in brown coats clinging to their daily routines  collecting, sorting, weighing, wrapping, labelling and stacking. In this apparently ordinary world, discover what lurks beyond the counter and journey deep into the hidden back rooms.

In a disused corner shop on Upper Tooting Road, theatre-rites is making magic from the fabric of the building with an extraordinary fusion of performance, installation art, puppetry and sound.

Presented by LIFT and Wiener Festwochen. With support from the Central School of Speech and Drama and Wandsworth Borough Council.

THE COMPANY

Since 1995, the internationally renowned theatre-rites has been stirring the imaginative lives of adults and children in places as diverse as a derelict house, an old tidal mill and a dusty cellar. Shopworks is directed by Sue Buckmaster in collaboration with guest artist Gary Stevens and installation artist Sophia Clist.

The visionary theatre-rites company are always a breath of fresh air TIME OUT
