LIFT learning workshop

Placement programme

LIFT is recognised as one of the world’s leading arts festivals. Since 1981, it has introduced theatre from over 60 countries to venues and unusual sites across London. LIFT challenges the status quo by producing and programming contemporary performance which asks what theatre can be, where it can happen and who can take part.In doing so, it has united a community from across London’s seemingly distant sectors (business, education, arts, civic, voluntary etc.) and cultures, playing a strategic and inspirational role on the London arts scene. Placements have historically played a significant role in making LIFT happen.

Individuals from a variety of universities and colleges have undertaken long-term placements as part of their formal course requirements or as a stepping-stone to employment at the end of their course. Others have taken part outside of the education sector as Continued Professional Development and as a way of developing their careers.

The Programme is intended as an opportunity to learn more about arts management by witnessing the internal workings and experiencing the day to day operation of LIFT. The programme is aimed at people who have chosen their career path as a specialist in the arts and who, through practical experience, either wish to complete their training or to advance their professional career. Each placement provides additional rather than essential support to the LIFT department in which s/he is based. As well as practical experience, the programme provides participants with guidance and structured feedback and opens doors to many professional networks.

Training Mission

The Programme is offered in the wider context of LIFT’s Training Policy:

Mission Statement:

To enable all LIFT personnel to develop their expertise, realise their potential and approach with confidence and skill the process of producing and delivering international participatory work

Placement structure

LIFT’s experience in this area suggests that Placements gain most when taking responsibility for their own learning outcomes and the LIFT team endeavour to accommodate, structure and respond to such individual initiative.

The Placement Programme offers:
  • A LIFT Department specification for each placement
  • A negotiated Learning Agreement
  • Monitoring and appraisal structure including regular placement - line manager meetings and formal appraisals after the initial 6 weeks and at the end of the placement period
  • A mentoring system pairing the placement with a member of the LIFT team
  • Evaluation: the Placement Log is the basis of ongoing evaluation and will contribute to the short report the placement will be required to write following the final appraisal.
  • LIFT Testimonial/ Reference: provided on completion of the placement on receipt of the placement report. This will be normally completed within two months.
